Risk Your Life

Did anybody here play RYL 1 (Risk Your Life – first chapter) ?

RYL is a MMORPG, Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, it’s a online game which has story line and a lot of quest to be accomplished. In my country, Indonesia, RYL 1 – The Path of the Emperor was released at 2004, and RYL 2 : Incomplete Union was released at 2005.

For me, RYL1 was having more fun than RYL2, because the concept is kinda different. In RYL1 there’s a battle between Kartelant/Human with Ak’kan/Inhuman/Beastly human but not in RYL2. This game was fun. The trouble is, bugs, which can be used for cheating, or there were a third party application that can be used to hack RYL Client. It brought RYL to hell. Because of cheats and bugs that got so worse, RYL was shutted down!

I was hoped that RYL could start again with fixed bug..But there’s no news from them.

But wait !! What’s this ? :

Return of Warriors (ROW) is a MMORPG that brings you an online Virtual reality atmosphere that is both completely interactive and immersive.

ROW is developed under a 3D environment that allows players to create their own character, define its role, do battle with it, and much more in a virtual world. No longer do players have to face monotonous individual games but they can now interact with thousands of other players from all over the world and undertake the adventure of a lifetime together.

ROW also features a Quest Mission System which provides players with several Quests with more being added at a later date. The game boasts a maximum resolution of 1920×1200 giving you a detailed look at the world you inhabit.

ROW players start off at Level 1, with minimal skills and abilities, but over time they gain experience points, through achievement, which allows them to advance to Level 2, and beyond. Here’s the a ROW / RYL / RYL2 looks like :

The early game goes like this: buy equipment to maximize your hit points and mana, meet monster, monster ignores you until you attack it (Seriously, many will walk right past you without a sniff), attack monster, kill monster (hopefully), sit down for a few minutes to restore your hit points and repeat. For those unfamiliar with the MMORPG grind it will quickly become monotonous.

The animation is one of the good things about RYL. The graphics are terrific. Once you get used to the herky-jerky nature of online lag, you have to admit the game looks quite fetching. With the draw distance set to far, the towns and mushroom forests and other locales look stunning from far away — an intriguing and beautiful alien world. The physics, however, are absolutely absent. I could jump like I was on the moon and I leap off cliffs, ledges or balconies easily 100 feet straight down with no ill effects.

You can choose to be several types of beings and classes, with more specialized classes that become available as you level up. For instance, humans can be fighters, with specializations as warriors or defenders. Human rogues can be assassins or archers. Non-humans include beastly Ak’Kan, large and ominous looking humanoids. Males can be several types of combatants, while females are officiators, which are basically magic users of sorts. The possibilities are varied for any type of play style, as long as it involves slaughtering random wilderness monsters by the hundreds.

The interface is intuitive to both Diablo players and FPS vets, with both keyboard mode and mouse mode available. In keyboard mode, you can click where you want to go, and click upon whom or what you wish to attack. The FPS style uses the standard ASWD keys to move and a number of shortcuts to call different screens, swap weapon slots and so forth.

You can also learn and employ powerful skills specific to your class — be they spells, warrior-oriented fare like powerful blows, or even support benefits for your entire party (more on parties later). You have a limited number of skill points, and skills come in increasing levels. You learn them by clicking on books, which you sometimes receive by killing beasts or can purchase from trainers and other characters. It would have been nice for skills to increase with usage, a la real life, but that is not to be.

Another strong aspect of RYL is the PvP (player versus player) combat. At any time, you can use a SHIFT key activated interface to challenge someone to a duel. It’s a great way to gain vital experience, to match your skill against other humans, and by forcing both combatants to agree to PvP combat, it keeps the server from becoming a mess of people randomly killing each other. That shift menu has other options as well, like inviting the target to join a party, or adding him or her to your friends list. Some of these options don’t confirm, so I’ve unintentionally initiated trades or “made friends” with quite a few people completely by accident.

Life in RYL is much better, or potentially worse, if you join a party. I had both positive and negative party experiences. Finding a party can be chore, especially while you’re driving a low-level character. Party members must be from the same “nation” as you, and if you watch the shouts regarding parties being formed they often are just seeking level 40 or higher healers. It is important to have a healer in your party, especially one that can resurrect the dead. You don’t get penalized when you die until later levels.

In good parties you share adventures, by which I mean slaughtering dozens of creatures, with fun people that enjoy socializing. In less positive party experiences you end up with hardcore geeks that want only to level up (much the same way junkies seek their next fix), abusive people who swear and bitch about the game a lot, and over-zealous adventurers who want to attack monsters intended for character levels far higher than yours. In all fairness, online play in any game — be it a MMORPG, an FPS or a RTS — is subject to interaction with the other humans, and experiences vary.

You can tackle quests, more as you reach higher levels, but they don’t add much interest to the game. Most are strictly mundane: kill five of this creature, deliver this here, go get that thingie, and as reward you get some gold and experience — maybe a high level item. Questing levels your character up far quicker than wading into the population of monsters and chopping them up. So, (developers, get this) there need to be many, many more quests.
